Custom Lines: Why Your Highland Adventure is Never Set in Stone

When you arrive at our base in Flúðir, the first thing we do isn’t hand you a map with a red line on it. We sit down, grab a coffee, and talk while you try on your gear. There is absolutely no rush; we want you to feel completely comfortable and confident before we head out into the unknown. This is where we get to know your riding style and what you’re truly hoping to see—ensuring that the day ahead is built specifically for you.

At Arctic Trailblazers, we (Eva and Óskar) don't believe in "fixed routes." The Icelandic Highlands are too vast, too moody, and too beautiful to be experienced on a conveyor belt. Every day is different, the light changes, the wind shifts, and most importantly, every rider has a different "why."

The Menu, Not the Mandate

We have our favorite playgrounds, of course. But whether we head toward the glaciers or the volcanic interior depends entirely on your pulse.

The Volcanic Deep-Dive: The Hekla Option

We might suggest heading toward Hekla. This area is a masterclass in volcanic texture and offers so many different views and trails, it feels like exploring an entirely different planet every few kilometers.

  • A Spectrum of Sands: We can ride through black, white, and red sand fields, all of which surrounds the area around Hekla, the "Queen of Iceland."

  • Shadow of the Peaks: We can navigate the beautiful volcanic trails around one of our favorite mountains, Krakatindur, a jagged peak that looks like it belongs in a dark fantasy novel.

  • Rauðaskál Crater: We can stand on the edge of Rauðaskál, a hidden explosion crater where the earth glows a deep, iron-rich red, a sight most Icelanders haven't even seen.

But if the wind is howling off the volcano, or if your heart is set on something else, we pivot. That’s the beauty of a private tour.

Technical Flow or Epic Vistas?

Maybe you want to test your limits on technical lava fields and river crossings. Or maybe you want a "flowy" day, riding softer on open gravel roads where you can see the Langjökull glacier shimmering on the horizon for hours.

Because it’s just us, we choose the terrain that matches your skill and your mood. We aren't rushing anywhere, we are just chasing the best riding conditions of the day and we’ll have our packed lunch somewhere out in a mossy field where we can find a natural resting place in the deep silence.

The Post-Ride Ritual

While the route is a mystery to you until we start the bikes, the ending is a tradition we rarely break. After hours of breathtaking views, ash, and adrenaline, there is a specific kind of magic in washing it all away.

That is why, after a cold refreshment at our base in Flúðir, we suggest our customers take a dip in Hrunalaug (or "Hruni" as we call it). It’s a tiny, ancient geothermal pool tucked into a green hillside just outside Flúðir, the perfect place to sit back and relax after a long riding day.

And if you are looking for something more luxurious, we highly recommend the recently opened Laugarás Lagoon, just 15 minutes away. It offers saunas with a view, drinks in the pool, and features the beautiful restaurant YLJA, which serves high-end cuisine to cap off your adventure.

And for those who want to experience exactly what us locals do after a hard day in the dirt, we suggest taking a plunge in our local swimming pool. This is where we ourselves frequent to soak our muscles and catch up on the day; it’s the true heart of the community and the perfect way to finish your journey.

Custom Lines: Your Highland Adventure

If you’re coming to Iceland this summer, don't book a "seat." Book a day with people who know the land and have the bikes to take you almost anywhere you want. Whether we end up at the edge of Rauðaskál or riding up Hekla's ridge, it will be the right route for you, because you chose it.
