Overview

This ride takes you deep into Iceland’s volcanic heart, close to the famous volcano Hekla.

 

The Lava Circle is a full-day guided adventure combining scenic trails, gravel roads, and quiet tarmac with some of the country’s most striking and lesser-known natural sights. Expect waterfalls, lava landscapes, hidden valleys, and flowing riding — all enjoyed at an easygoing pace in a small group.

 

Meet & Briefing

We meet at 9:00 to gear up, enjoy coffee, and go through a pre-ride briefing. Once everyone’s ready, we set off for the day.

 

The Ride

Departure is around 10:00, starting with mostly tarmac before transitioning into gravel roads and trail sections. The route flows through varied terrain, offering both fun riding and incredible scenery.

 

Highlights Along the Way

• Hjálparfoss Waterfall, a beautiful double waterfall framed by basalt columns

• Ride to the top of Sámsstaðamúli and around Bjarnalón Reservoir

• Crossing the Bjarnalón Dam

• Háifoss and Granni (the Twin Waterfalls), among Iceland’s tallest and most impressive waterfalls

• Lunch stop near the waterfalls

• Gjáin Valley, a lush hidden oasis with waterfalls, lava formations, and winding paths

• Stöng, a historic farm buried by volcanic ash from Hekla in 1104 and rediscovered in 1939

• Scenic looping route back toward our base

 

Return & Relax

We’re back between 15:30–16:00, with time to unwind over traditional refreshments.
